Reading between the lines

The literary program at the museum. We read texts from autobiographies, diaries, works of literature and criticism and discuss them in the context of the exhibition. To see words and works of art enrich one another is inspiring and opens up new horizons.

Art Print Kirchner – Master of Printmaking
In front of selected works, we read passages from Kirchner's letters in which he writes about printing techniques. They deal with his hand prints, his strict views on printing and his stylistic development. The letters show how important it was to Kirchner to control the processes of producing his prints. In front of the works in the exhibition, we can place his statements in exciting contexts. He wrote to Gustav Schiefler in 1913: "I will gladly leave you the portfolio of prints for as long as you want. Your thoughts about it are very interesting to me. I don't notice when I change, and the new things grow out of the interaction between painting and drawing with the sculptural woodworking and the material advantages of graphics."
